The 40 inventive principles are reusable solution patterns extracted from patent analysis. They turn vague creativity into a checklist of proven moves that have solved similar contradictions before.
A few worth knowing
- Segmentation — split an object into independent parts
- Asymmetry — change from a symmetrical to an asymmetric shape
- Local quality — make each part perform its own function in its own best conditions
- Dynamics — allow characteristics to change for optimal action
- Cheap disposables — replace expensive objects with cheaper disposable ones
A classic example: a bolt that is hard to reach is segmented into a captive screw (principle 1) so it never falls out. Same problem, a principle points you straight to the answer.
