Design for Assembly (DFA) focuses on how easy a product is to put together. The fewer parts and the fewer steps, the cheaper and more reliable the assembly.
The two levers
- Reduce part count — combine parts that do not need to move relative to each other
- Reduce assembly operations — use snap-fits, self-locating features, one-direction assembly
DFA's biggest wins usually come from eliminating fasteners. Every screw is a part, a tool, a step, and a chance to fail.
