Jigs vs Fixtures: What is the Difference?
The words get used interchangeably, but they do different jobs — and the difference matters in the shop.

The words jig and fixture get used interchangeably, but they do different jobs. Getting them right matters when you specify tooling.
The difference
- Jig guides the tool — for example a drilling jig that positions the drill bit
- Fixture holds the part — for example a welding fixture that clamps parts in alignment
- Gauge measures — a check that the part came out right
A good jig or fixture turns a skilled operation into a repeatable one. It is the difference between one craftsman who can do it and ten people who can.
