A welding jig holds parts in the right position while they are welded. Its job is to control heat distortion and keep assemblies consistent from part to part.
What a good welding jig does
- Locates parts on a datum, not on a random face
- Allows access for the weld torch
- Releases easily after weld shrinkage
- Is itself rigid enough not to warp
A jig that is too tight locks in stress and springs when released; too loose and the parts shift. The right clearance is designed, not guessed.
